Rainbow Fun: A Colorful Collection of Brain-Building Activities
A Look Inside Our March Little Brain Box
Love it when things get colorful? So do kids! Whether you're exploring colors, learning about weather, or just looking to brighten up your day with some vibrant fun, this collection of rainbow-themed activities is sure to spark imagination and creativity.
This March, our Little Brain Boxes were bursting with color! From puzzles to sensory play, we used rainbows to spark curiosity and build essential developmental skills—all while having fun. Let’s take a peek at a few of the hands-on, brain-building activities that were included in our rainbow-themed box.
Rainbow Circle Puzzle
This eye-catching Rainbow Circle Puzzle was a favorite for good reason—it’s vibrant, versatile, and engaging. Kids of all ages got in on the action with two versions: a junior version for little learners and a more challenging version for older problem-solvers.
But this puzzle isn’t just about matching colors—it’s a clever way to support early literacy too. As children scan from left to right and top to bottom to find where each piece fits, they’re building the same visual tracking skills used in reading.

Colorful Cup Bowling
This activity turned into a full-blown sporting event at our house. The kids were all in—lining up stuffed animals as spectators, keeping score, and testing different throwing strategies.
And guess who had the best shot? Our two-year-old. It was the perfect reminder that little hands can do big things too. This activity is all about gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and a whole lot of laughter.
Rainbow Dropper Challenge
Who knew cotton balls and colored water could be so much fun? For this colorful dropper activity, we used a heart-shaped vase from the Target dollar spot, but a pan or baking tray works just as well. Want to level up the challenge? Try taping a grid over a tray and encourage your child to aim for each square.
Squeezing those droppers helps strengthen little hands while also giving kids a chance to work on control and focus—skills that support everything from writing to dressing independently.
Rainbow Cloud Craft
The Rainbow Cloud Craft was a fun and creative project that turned out to be the perfect pre-dinner activity—easy, calming, and mess-free. Using air-dry clay, the kids shaped fluffy white clouds, then laced colorful beads onto pipe cleaners to match the rainbow colors, pushing the beads into the clay to form a vibrant rainbow.
Paper Plate Rainbow
This bright, whimsical project was a total hit. The boys dove into the rainbow fun with excitement and focus.
As they lace beads, cut straws, and color their paper plate rainbows, they’re working hard on those fine motor skills. Whether they’re just starting to build these skills or reinforcing what they’ve already learned, this craft is a fun, low-pressure way to grow strong little hands.
Magic Milk
Ready for some rainbow science? This simple experiment is full of wow-factor and wonder.
Start with a shallow tray of cooking oil, then use food coloring to tint small cups of milk. Grab a syringe and squirt the colorful milk into the oil. Watch as the milk and oil swirl without mixing—because oil is hydrophobic, and milk contains water.
Not only is it visually stunning, but it also introduces science concepts in a hands-on way. Plus, using the syringe builds motor planning and coordination.
